The Austin real estate market is at an all-time high, and the area’s residential construction industry is booming for both new home construction and home remodels. That means many homeowners are on the lookout for a reputable general contractor/homebuilder, and they would likely start by searching online for a licensed contractor in their area.
However, especially for homeowners moving into Austin from out of state, finding out that Texas has no licensing or registration requirements for general contractors is a shock. Until 2010, contractors had to register with the Texas Residential Construction Commission, but the commission was deemed ineffective and disbanded after seven years of existence.
